About

Melissa

Melissa O’Shea’s commitment to public service is shaped by lived experience. Raised in poverty, moving between rentals and even living in a hotel, she grew up with the instability many families face. With one parent living with a disability and another who is in recovery from addiction, she learned early the power of resilience, dignity, and second chances. A public school graduate and cosmetologist, Melissa built a career rooted in service and connection. As a wife, mother, and NICU mom whose daughter received three years of early intervention services, she has firsthand experience navigating the healthcare and early childhood systems.

In her role as Third Vice Chair of the Florence County Democratic Party, Melissa has helped in reorganizing the local party, rebuilding its presence in the community, and engaging voters through door knocking, phone banking, networking, volunteer events, organizing protests, and expanding outreach to young people. These experiences shaped her into a bridge builder who believes in practical solutions, compassionate leadership, and a government that listens to and shows up in service of working families.

The Issues

Learn More about Melissa's progressive ideas for South Carolina

Every child deserves a high quality public education, no matter their ZIP code. Strong public schools are the foundation of thriving communities, and they require stable funding, supported educators, modern facilities, and environments where students feel safe, valued, and ready to learn.

Healthcare is a human right - not a privilege, not a commodity, and not something families should lose because they change jobs, get sick, or fall on hard times. A universal, statewide healthcare option ensures every South Carolinian can get the care they need without fear of bankruptcy, discrimination, or denial. A healthy population strengthens our workforce, our schools, and our communities.

Women’s healthcare is healthcare, and it must be treated as such. Every woman and girl deserves access to safe, affordable, and comprehensive care, free from political control. Protecting reproductive freedom for all people is essential to protecting equality, opportunity, and basic human dignity.

Every person deserves to live freely and authentically without fear of discrimination or harm. Equality is not optional. It is a fundamental right. Protecting LGBTQIA+ people strengthens families, communities, and the future of our state.

Food security is a basic human right. No child, no family, and no community should struggle to access healthy, affordable food. Ensuring food security strengthens public health, supports local farmers, and builds stronger, more resilient communities.

South Carolina’s environment is one of its greatest strengths - from our farmland and forests to our rivers, wetlands, and coastline. Protecting these resources is essential for public health, economic stability, and the wellbeing of future generations. Climate change is real, its impacts are already here, and our state must respond with science-based, forward-thinking solutions that reduce harm, strengthen communities, and build a sustainable future.
